English: LO: To comprehend Chapter 2.

I hope you enjoyed listening to/reading along with Chapter One of the Bad Beginning. Today's English task is linked to Chapter 2 of the story, but before you listen/begin reading, make sure you complete the vocabulary checklist. Miss Hughes’ group – L.O. To find fractions of amounts

Today you are going back to working with fractions and using them to find fractions of amounts. I know you have encountered this before, so hopefully it will all come flooding back to you!

Think about which operation (+, -, x or ÷) you are going to use to find a fraction of an amount? How do you know how many equal groups you will need? Which part of the fraction tells you this?

Mrs. Gregory & Mrs. Postlethwaite’s group – L.O. To write hundredths as decimals

Today you are looking again at decimals and focusing on hundredths. I’m sure you can work out that a hundredth is one part of a whole split into 100 equal parts and is written as 1/100  .

You have been using a place value column grid a lot over the last few lessons, and today will be no different. You know now that the tenths column is on the right hand side of the decimal point. Where do you think the hundredths column will go? How would you write 7/100 as a decimal? Which place value columns do you need to put zeros in to make sure the number can be read correctly? (Imagine the place value columns aren’t there, how do you know it’s a decimal?)

If I were to offer you 3/10  of my chocolate bar or  3/100 of it, which fraction would give you the most chocolate? Remember, the larger the denominator, the more parts you need to share into.
