Wednesday 22nd April

English L.O: To use inference to write from the perspective of a different character

Activity 1: Listen to chapter 16 of 'Pig Heart Boy' on the Learning--> Stories page of the website.

Activity 2: In this chapter, a reporter makes a comparison between Dr Bryce and Dr Frankenstein. Use your existing knowledge of the story of Dr Frankenstein OR watch the short child-friendly clip below to explain why you think this reporter made this comparison in your home learning books (minimum of 2 sentences).

Activity 3: For this activity, I want you to write from the perspective of Dr Bryce. This story is currently from Cameron's perspective only. Cam is very nervous before beginning the press conference. He is overwhelmed by the roaring crowd of reporters eager to ask him questions about his operation. However, instead of thinking about how Cam feels, I would like you to consider how Dr Bryce feels before and during the press conference. Remember, it is a very controversial procedure and many people disagree with what Dr Bryce is doing.

  • How would he feel in the lead up to this press conference?
  • What thoughts and feelings swarm his mind?
  • What does he see, hear and feel during the press conference as every moment unfolds?

TASK: Write a short (minimum of 2 paragraphs) diary entry from Dr Bryce's perspective about all he has experienced during the lead up to the press conference and throughout it.

A diary entry should:

  • Be written in the past tense (remember to use past tense verbs).
  • Be written in first person (using pronouns such as I, me, we).
  • Discuss how the character feels whilst describing the events which have taken place.
  • Include adverbials to sequence events (e.g 'this morning, 'next', 'after that', 'hours later etc.).

R.E. L.O: Can you believe the Bible account of creation in Genesis and in scientific theories of evolution?

You all know the story of Genesis recounted in the bible. God created man in His image across the seven days. You will hopefully be familiar with the story of Adam and Eve and the creation as you will have learned in year 3 or 4.

Charles Darwin

Scan read the article on Charles Darwin by clicking on his name above. There are some tricky words in there, but try to pick out the key principles. Ask a parent to read it with you if they are available. Focus on the sections 'growing doubts', 'a simple muddle' and 'Learning from Darwin: The basis of belief'.

Darwin's religious views were seriously challenged by his theories of evolution. He struggled with two points in particular.

1. The 'special creation' as outlined in Genesis.

2. Human suffering or that the principles behind  his theory of evolution were cruel (he experienced this first hand with the death of three of his children).

Watch this video where a scientist argues that the creation account in Genesis can be reconciled with science.

http://www.testoffaith.com/resources/resource.aspx?id=510

Can someone believe in the creation story of the Bible and the science of evolution, as Darwin suggests? Does the scientific pursuit of proof, make it more difficult for a person to live by faith, as Darwin's wife Emma suggested?

Either write a few lines down showing your thoughts or discuss the answers to these questions with someone in your family. Try to give reasons for your point of view.

P.E.

At a time where we all find ourselves indoors for the most of the day, we should bare in mind how important daily exercise is for our health and wellbeing, particularly our mental health. If you are able to, take your device somewhere with plenty of space (even the garden on a nice sunny day) or clear some space in front of your computer and follow along with Joe Wicks for a 30 minute workout. I will definitely be doing the same!
