Wednesday 3rd June

English L.O: To generate imagery and describe the English countryside.

Activity 1: : Listen to Chapter 11 of 'The Stolen Sister' on the Learning --> Stories page of the website.

In this chapter, Elfie and Joe are trying to locate 'Willow Tree Cottage'. Their journey there and back takes them through the beautiful English countryside in the middle of May. I'm sure many of you won't struggle to image exactly what Elfie and Joe are experiencing as they make their way through luscious green fields, over bubbling streams and down winding country roads as many of us go for our daily exercise in places similar to this.

Activity 2: Today, I want us to create an idyllic image of exactly what Eflie and Joe experienced on their way to Willow Tree Cottage. Open up the file below titled 'Imagining the Countryside'. I want you to either write on this worksheet or set your home learning books out in a similar fashion to create a 'senses map'. Use the prompts in each box to think about what you might see, hear, smell, taste and feel in the countryside and put these ideas into some fantastic descriptive phrases.

  • I have attached below a file called 'Countryside Description Prompts', if you are struggling with what you might find in a setting such as this.
  • Follow this link to see some beautiful images of the English countryside for inspiration when generating your description: The English Countryside

Activity 3: Have a go at putting these phrases into sentences and/or paragraphs to create a description of Elfie and Joe's journey. You could write this from their perspective or from the 3rd person.

Success Criteria:
  • Expanded Noun Phrases
  • Similes
  • Metaphors
  • Personification
  • Fronted adverbials
  • The 5 senses

R.E. L.O: To explore the Christian holiday of 'Pentecost' and the decent of the Holy Spirit.

Activity 1: Read the story of Pentecost:

Before he returned to his Father in Heaven, the risen Jesus visited his disciples (followers) and promised to send the Holy Spirit to help them. One morning, when the disciples were gathered together with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and some other women, they suddenly heard a noise like a strong wind. Then they saw what looked to be flames of fire over each of their heads.

The Holy Spirit filled the disciples with courage and faith, empowering them to share the Good News with others. They began to tell others about Jesus, and that he died for us and rose to new life. On this day, the gift of the Spirit allowed the disciples to communicate even with those who spoke different languages.

On Pentecost, the Apostle Peter spoke to a gathered crowd. He asked the people to be baptised and receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit. Many people were baptised that day. The Apostles continued to baptise many people. They laid their hands on them so that they might receive the Holy Spirit, giving them strength and courage.

The event of Pentecost changed the world and gave rise to today’s Church.

The Holy Spirit came to the disciples on Pentecost. God the Father and Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to help and guide the Church. The event of Pentecost changed the world and gave rise to today’s Church. The Holy Spirit is still with us today.

P.E.

At a time where we all find ourselves indoors for the most of the day, we should bear in mind how important daily exercise is for our health and wellbeing, particularly our mental health. If you are able to, take your device somewhere with plenty of space (even the garden on a nice sunny day) or clear some space in front of your computer and follow along with Joe Wicks for a 30 minute workout. I will definitely be doing the same!
