Monday 23rd March

Welcome to Day 1 of Merlins' Home Learning. I hope that you have all enjoyed a safe weekend with family and friends. Below, you will find an English, Maths and Science task to be completed in your home learning books.

English:

Test yourself on last week's spellings which you have stuck in your spelling records. Make a record of your score. New spellings for you to be tested on next week can be found below.

In addition to completing the tasks below, I would highly recommend reading a challenging book of your choice for a minimum of 30 minutes per day.

L.O: To interpret character feeling and write a first person diary recount.

Listen to chapter 1 and 2 of 'Pig Heart Boy'  by Malorie Blackman on the Abberley 'Learning' --> 'Stories' page.

Activity 1: Whilst you are listening to chapter 1 and 2, create two separate lists of adjectives (describing words) to describe the characters of 'Cam' and 'Marlon'. If you would like to, draw what you believe Marlon and Cam look like, labelling these pictures with your adjectives to describe both characters.

Activity 2: Write a short (minimum of 2 paragraphs) diary entry from Cam's perspective which describes his day at the pool with his friends.

A diary entry should:

  • Be written in the past tense (remember to use past tense verbs).
  • Be written in first person (using pronuns such as I, me, we).
  • Discuss how the character feels whilst describing the events which have taken place.
  • Include adverbials to sequence events (e.g 'this morning, 'next', 'after that', 'hours later etc.).

Optional Challenge: Write a paragraph which predicts how the story will contiue

Maths: L.O: To find missing angles on a straight line and around a point

Last week, we explored the 5 different types of angles (straight line, acute, right angle, obtuse and reflex).

We know:

Acute = is less than 90 degrees

Obtuse= more than 90 degrees, but less than 180 degrees

Right angle= 90 degrees

Straight line= 180 degrees

Reflex= more than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees

Actvity:

Today, Y5 will work on either: the Bronze (A), Silver (B) OR Gold (C) tasks on pages 116-117 attached below.

Today, Y6 will work on either: the Bronze (A), Silver (B) OR Gold (C) tasks on pages 114-115 attached below.

Platinum Challenge: Find the platinum challenge attached below (optional)

Complete questions 9-16

(some of you may also complete questions 17-22 for even more of a challenge!)

TEACHING POINTS TO REMEMBER:

  • The angles on a straight line (half turn) add up to 180 degrees.
  • The angles around a point (full turn) add up to 360 degrees.
  • Angles that are opposite one another are equal (worth the same).

Science: L.O: To explore the origins of how temperature is measured.

Read pages 1-4 in 'Hot and Cold (Science)' which can be found below.

Answer questions 1-8 in FULL sentences. These can be found on page 5 in the box titled 'Exercise 5.1'

P.E.

At a time where we all find ourselves indoors for the most of the day, we should bare in mind how important daily exercise is for our health and wellbeing, particularly our mental health. If you are able to, take your device somewhere with plenty of space (even the garden on a nice sunny day) or clear some space in front of your computer and follow along with Joe Wicks for a 30 minute workout. I will definitely be doing the same!
