I hope you enjoyed finding out about gardens yesterday because today we are going to be using all our ideas to design our own amazing gardens, just like Capability Brown.   I am really excited about this task and enjoyed looking at the different websites yesterday.  Hopefully later in the year the gardens will reopen and we can go and visit some of them.

So to design your garden.  First of all think about what type of garden do you want it to be.  Do you want a small  garden with flowers and vegetables or a huge garden with lakes and woods?  What are the favourite parts from your garden you would like to include?  Mickey Thompson says the apple trees!  Did you get some good ideas from the websites you looked at?  Purvis says the garden has to have a fountain.

Next get a big sheet of paper and some coloured pens and pencils and get designing.  Remember you are doing a plan or map of your garden not a picture.  Earlier in the week we talked about imagining we were looking at the garden from above (a bird's eye view) to help us with this.  When we are drawing a plan or map we draw simple pictures to show us what the main things are and then add a key to explain what they are.

Mickey Thompson and Purvis had a go and this is what they came up with.   Can you spot the fountain and the tea shop?  I can imagine them getting lost in the maze and I love the hedges in the shape of animals.

Maths.

Today Year 1 and Reception are going to be doing separate activities.  Reception are going to working on doubles and Year 1 are going to continuing their work on multiplication.

Reception.

Today we are going to be thinking about doubles.

A double is where we add the same number twice, for example 1 + 1 = 2

Mickey Thompson and Purvis have been playing with the dice today.  Can you see who has rolled a double? (Remember they have the same number twice)

In school we use a song and actions to help us remember our doubles to 10.  Make sure you show your doubles on your fingers.

1 + 1 = 2   Tap them on your shoe

2 + 2 = 4   Stamp upon the floor

3 + 3 = 6   Do some finger clicks

4 + 4 = 8   Put your arms up straight

5 + 5 = 10  Let's do it all again

 We repeat the song 3 times getting faster each time and finish the last time with 5 + 5 = 10 Let's hide them in a den and hide our hands behind our back.

Below there is a powerpoint which uses the spots on a ladybird to demonstrates doubles up to 20.

After that have a go at the butterfly doubles sheets attached.  Can you write a doubles number sentence for each butterfly?

Parents - the first sheet contains doubles up to 10.  If your child is confident try the second sheet which extends the activity to doubles up to 20.

Extra challenge - Can you think of some more words and actions for our song for doubles up to 20?  

Year 1.

This week we have learnt about counting groups and writing multiplication number sentences.  Now we are going to apply this knowledge to solving some problems.

Remember to keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as it will really help you when working out multiplication problems.

Below there are 2 sheets to practise counting in 5s and 10s.

Parents - please be aware there are 4 sheets for each. There is no need to do all 4 just pick your favourite to complete.

Now for some problem solving using our multiplication knowledge.  Have a look at the sheets below.  There are two versions,  an easier or a harder version, so please do the one you feel most comfortable doing.  You may find it helps to draw out the problem and don't forget to write your multiplication number sentence!
