Friday 15th May

Hello Wrens

How did your gardens turn out?  Mickey Thompson and Purvis can't wait to see them so don't forget to email your designs to the school office.

English.

As it's Friday it's tricky word day for Reception and grammar day for Year 1.

Reception.

Continue to practise the tricky words you already have.  There will be a new set next week.

Blending for reading - Have a game of pairs.

Copy each of  your tricky words onto small equal sized pieces of paper (it's good writing practise too!).  You will need to do this twice so you have two sets of your tricky words.  Now you need to jumble them all up and arrange the pieces of paper face down on the table.  Take it in turns to turn over two pieces of paper.  If your tricky words match you have a pair and you can keep it!  If they don't match turn them back face down and it's the next person's turn.  Who will find the most tricky word pairs?

Segmenting for spelling - Have a go at the tricky word activity sheets attached below. There are a mixture of writing and reading activities.

Year 1.

This week we are going to learn about prefixes

A prefix is when we add something to the start of a word to make a new word.

For example

happy     Download Smiling Face Emoji Icon | Emoji Island

unhappy   Unhappy Emoji [Free Download IOS Emojis] | Emoji Island

The root word happy has stayed the same but we have added the prefix un to change the meaning of the word.

The prefix we are looking at today is the prefix un.  The prefix un means not. When we add it to the beginning of a word the word takes on the opposite meaning. For example

Purvis' shoe laces are tied.

Mickey Thompson's shoe laces are untied.

Take a look at the video below to find out more.

Now work through the activities on the power point attached below.

Parents - there are a number of games and 2 writing activities.  Your child may not want to complete them all so please select the ones you feel are most suitable.  Please complete the writing activities in your home learning book.

Maths.

Reception

Use the song below to recap your doubles.

Use the links below to play Jungle doubles - there are 2 levels - doubles up to 10 and doubles up to 20

Then have a go at the attached sheet below to apply your knowledge of doubles to solving problems.  Don't forget some games are really good for practising your doubles to like dominoes or dice games.

Year 1

Today we are going to be looking at arrays.

Arrays are really useful for helping us to count in groups and work out multiplication number sentences.

Take a look at the array Purvis has made out of cups.  Purvis has 2 rows of 3 cups

We can say Purvis has 2 groups of 3 cups which is 6 cups altogether or  we can write it as a number sentence 2 x 3 = 6.

Now let's look at the array a different way.

This time we can say Purvis has 3 columns of 2 cups.

We can say Purvis has 3 groups of 2 cups  or we can write it as the number sentence 3 x 2 = 6.

Did you spot the answer was the same both times?

That is because it doesn't matter whether we say 3 groups or 2 or 2 groups of 3 the answer is the same.  In a multiplication number sentence it doesn't matter which way round the numbers are.

Can you remember the other type of number sentence where it doesn't matter which way round the numbers are?

Have a look at the video below to learn a bit more.

Mickey Thompson has created an array out of biscuits.  Can you write two multiplication number sentences to go with it?   (I have told him he isn't allowed to eat all the biscuits!)

Now have a go at the activities attached below.  As usual there are two different levels for you to choose from.

Mrs Lench has created some lovely flower based crafts for you to have a go at.  They are attached below.  We particularly love the sunflower!

Have a lovely weekend.
