Thursday 21st May

English L.O To write a dramatic opening scene/ narrative.

Activity 1: Listen to Chapter 7 of 'The Stolen Sister' on the Learning --> Stories page of the website.

Who says music and writing don't go hand in hand? In the past, whenever I have watched the music video for 'Titanium' by David Guetta, I always say to myself I must use this for a writing lesson with Y5 & 6!

Activity 1: Watch the video below, pause when I tell you to and make a note (it could be bullet points to start with) of what you can see.

  •

Imagine you are the young boy in the video:
  • PAUSE AT 00.20! Describe what you can see around you.
  • PAUSE AT 00.40! How do you feel? How does your teacher feel when she sees you? Can you describe yours and her body language instead of telling me? (show me don't tell me!)
  • PAUSE AT 1.30! Describe how fast the bike is going. How would you be feeling at this moment? Would your legs be aching in pain from pedalling furiously? Would the wind be ripping through your hair?

Already, you have some notes which will help you write a brilliant opening scene to a story!

Activity 3: Watch the remainder of the video and pause when you feel there is something you want to describe or make note of and do so in your home learning books.

Activity 4: Write a story (or a descriptive opening scene) using this music video. I want your story or scene to be dramatic with lots of powerful description. You won't tell me that people are frightened or sad, you will describe how their faces appear and the body language looks that makes you think they are feeling the emotions they are! Aim for AT LEAST 3 paragraphs, however, if you are writing the story I know that will be much more. I have attached a template below if you wish to use it. Below you will see success criteria to help prompt you on the language to use and a sentence opener map to help you start your sentences.

I am so looking forward to reading your scenes or stories! Please share these on J2E but please don't feel pressured to finish and share these today, I expect many of you will take today and tomorrow at a minimum.

Success Criteria
  • First person pronouns
  • Expanded Noun Phrases
  • Adverbs
  • Similes and metaphors
  • Personification
  • Fronted adverbials
  • Show me don't tell me
  • Ellipsis for suspense

History L.O: To explore the significant inventions of the Victorian period and how they compare to their modern equivalent.

The Victorian period saw many major developments and inventions that made travel, communications and trade easier for many people. The railways allowed people to travel cheaply and rapidly, opening up new possibilities for both rich and poor. The postal service expanded after the introduction of the 'Penny Post'.

Many of the things we take for granted today, such as photography, telephones, electric light bulbs and cars were invented during Queen Victoria's reign.

Activity 1: Watch this video which summarises many Victorian inventions in one fun video! Whilst you are watching, make a list of all the inventions that are mentioned!

Activity 2: For today's lesson, you are going to complete the activity attached below titled 'Victorian Inventions'. For first task on this attachment, you will need to match the Victorian invention to its inventor. This link may be useful for this task --> Victorian Invention Timeline.

Activity 3: After this matching activity, answer the following four questions in your own words. Consider the significance of these inventions and why they were so important in the lives of Victorians as well as our own lives today.

Activity 4: After answering these questions, have a go at the activities later in the attached file. These activities involve you drawing the modern equivalent of some Victorian inventions and thinking about how they are similar or different to how they look today and how they are used!

If you have time, watch these videos for more information on Victorian Inventions: Invention Videos.

A reminder of how to share your work with me on J2E and get some feedback!

P.E.

At a time where we all find ourselves indoors for the most of the day, we should bear in mind how important daily exercise is for our health and wellbeing, particularly our mental health. If you are able to, take your device somewhere with plenty of space (even the garden on a nice sunny day) or clear some space in front of your computer and follow along with Joe Wicks for a 30 minute workout. I will definitely be doing the same!

OR alternatively, Mrs Lightfoot has uploaded some very exciting links to other online PE sessions which you can access by following this link:   Alternative P.E. Ideas
