Sport at Abberley

Sport is a very important part of school life at Abberley. We are committed to ensuring that a wide variety of high quality sports opportunities are provided for the children who learn here. We believe that sport offers a fantastic chance to learn important life skills, but most importantly we want to share our love of life and sport is a large part of that. Through sport, friendships are formed and solidified. Through sport doors of opportunity open, confidence is increased, and the children feel more fulfilled and healthy as a result.  We aim for all our children to gain a positive experience of sport which will inspire them develop a lifelong love of physical activity, maintain an active lifestyle and reach their full potential.

In addition to our ambitious PE curriculum we provide many extra-curricular and competitive sporting opportunities across the school. Physical activity is positively promoted on a daily basis through our Happy Lunchtime programme and lunchtime and after-school sports clubs.  These are run by staff members and professional sports coaches and cover a wide range of sports and physical activities.  We are lucky to have two outdoor playgrounds, a school field and use of a large indoor space in Abberley Village Hall so the children have lots of space to engage in physical activity.

All children within the school attend a sports festival each year through our membership of The Chantry Sports Cluster where they are engage in new experiences and are taught new skills by professional sports coaches.  In addition, Key Stage 2 children attend 2 residential visits which feature Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) and have the opportunity to experience bell boating on the River Severn.

Through our membership of the West Worcestershire School Games Network and The Chantry Sports Cluster we offer a full programme of competitive sporting events which all children are encouraged to participate in.  These are supplemented by intraschool House sports competitions across the school year.

The school achieved the School Games Gold Mark Award for the 2023/24 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.
