This week in English, we began exploring the topic of the Great Fire of London. Our new book for this half-term is Toby and the Great Fire of London by Margaret Nash and Jane Cope. To give the children some background knowledge on the Great Fire of London, they moved around the room in groups exploring different information, pictures and videos about the event. They then had to summarise the key information and create a mind map from their findings. Towards the end of the week, we began looking at non-chronological reports and identifying the key features they include.
In maths, we have been continuing our unit on addition and subtraction. The children have been working on adding to ten and adding across ten, as well as subtracting to ten and subtracting across ten. Any additional practice of addition and subtraction at home would be really helpful to reinforce their learning.
In science, we started our new topic: Animals, including Humans. This week, the children identified the basic needs that all animals, including humans, require to survive, such as air, water and food. We also discussed the differences between what a human needs and what they may want.
In art, we began our topic of watercolour painting. The children experimented with watercolour paints, exploring how they work and what they can create. They then used the watercolours to build imagery and tell stories through their artwork.
PE this half term is still on a Tuesday and a Thursday. Please send your child with their PE kit to school on those days. Tuesday is outdoor PE where we are learning about 'Target Games' and on a Thursday we are indoor doing 'Dance'.
Some of the Year 2 children will now be bringing home a blue spelling book on a Friday. Please try and find the time to read the information inside the cover and if you can help the children to practise their spellings at home during the week it would be greatly appreciated. The children will then need to bring back the books on Friday mornings ready for their session with Mrs Shelley. The spellings will be familiar to the children and they are the same words they have been practising in their Little Wandle Spelling sessions.
In music this week, we have looked at our new project, 'The Great Fire of London'. We listened to the Ritual Fire Dance and talked about the dynamics and tempo used by the composer, Manuel de Falla. We looked at the instruments used and discussed how to play them.
In RE, we have introduced our new topic, 'Why does Easter matter to Christians?' We talked about Palm Sunday and what happened as Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on a donkey.
