The weather definitely feels like December has arrived! Please can I urge you to send your child to school with a coat as the playground is cold during the winter months. With the colder temperatures I have introduced the lunchtime zone activity to be based inside so children have the choice to spend their lunch break either inside or outside.
Morning and afternoon breaks will remain outside so all children have some fresh air during the school day and therefore, as stated, please remember a coat.
Thank you to the Friends for organising a wonderful Christmas Fayre last night. It was an enjoyable evening and hopefully it has helped to put us in the festive mood.
Please can Little Wandle books be returned to school on a Monday so they can be re-handed back out to other pupils. Some pupils are having to bring home photocopied books as copies have not been returned to school. Also, you may be moving furniture around to host Christmas decorations and therefore can you check if any school library or reading books have been misplaced in these normally hidden places! Thankyou.
Have a lovely weekend.
Yours sincerely
Claire Shelley, Interim Headteacher

Top tip for the week
Two weeks ago I placed in here a link for an online presentation by West Mercia police. Hopefully many of you were able to log in and listen. I did and found the case stories which were shared about local children from around Worcestershire quite hard hitting. I would like to share with you their three top tips for keeping your child safe online.
A - Applications. Use privacy controls
B - Block adult content
C - Communicate. Take time to talk with your children about their online activity
We have an in-depth online safety curriculum in school so all children are taught about how to keep themselves safe online. However, as parents, we also need to play our part in this. Here is a link for you to use about applying privacy controls.

This week the Wrens have enjoyed learning more about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We hoped you liked the beautiful diva lamps we made. We have also had lots of fun using our knowledge to recreate Diwali festivities in our celebration role play.
In maths we have looked in depth at the composition of 4 and 5 and the different ways we can make the numbers. In phonics we have now finished our programme of phonics learning for the autumn term. Over the next few weeks we will be consolidating our knowledge and practising our blending and segmenting skills. We will also be reviewing the tricky words we have learnt. Although there will not be any new homework sheets please continue to practise the previous sheets with your child as we will be carrying out phonics assessments before the end of term.
Rehearsals for our nativity play are continuing to progress well. If your child has brought home lines please can you help them practise at home. Thank you.

This week in English, Year 2 have been focusing on their non-chronological reports. At the beginning of the week the children had a look at lots of information about meerkats. They then used this to collate facts and plan what they wanted to include in their own non-chronological reports. They spent the remainder of the week producing their non-chronological reports. They have done really well with these and they look great. Year 1 also did some work on the book Meerkat Mail and produced a party invitation to Sonny’s welcome home party.
In maths, Year 1 summarised their learning of addition and subtraction, but of course this learning will be regularly applied in other areas of maths. The children then moved on to the topic of shape. They revisited their learning of 2D shapes before moving on to 3D shapes. They have been identifying and exploring cubes, cuboids, cylinders, spheres, pyramids and cones. They built towers with these shapes to discover which stacked well, they have made them out of plasticine and have played guess the mystery shape game. Challenge your child to find these 3D shapes around the house. For example, a can of soup for cylinder.
In Year 2, the children have continued with their learning of addition and subtraction. They have been adding two-digit numbers across a ten and applying this knowledge to different questions. They have also been learning how to subtract two 2-digit numbers from one another without crossing a ten.
Our bookvent calendar is looking good so far! If you haven’t yet brought in a book, then there is still time to do so.
If you have any Little Wandle or school library books at home please can you ensure that they come back as we’re missing a few already. Little Wandle books go out on a Friday and should be returned after the weekend on the Monday.

Homework
Year 1: Weekly phonics practise sheets are sent home on a Friday in a red phonics book. Information is on the front page of the red book to explain the weekly homework. Your child should 'celebrate' their reading and enjoy 'showing off' how well they can read their Little Wandle book to you. Please read this a few times while it is at home. The library 'sharing' book should be enjoyed and read together as it will contain words with graphemes which have not been taught in school yet.
Year 2: 1 page of mental arithmetic maths book set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. 15 minutes of TTRS (TTrockstars) 'Garage' set on a Friday to be completed for the following Wednesday. Spellings go home on a Friday to learn before the test the following Friday. There are 10 games on Spelling Shed set to help the children learn these.

This week we have embarked on our learning about multiplication and division. The children have continued to work hard to understand how to use arrays to represent multiplication calculations. We have also moved onto the 3 times table.
In English, we have completed and edited our creature character description. The children have produced some fantastic work and we will be moving onto a narrative piece in the coming days.

In geography we discussed the pros and cons of living near volcanoes. The children were introduced to the idea that there are in fact some advantages to living near volcanoes and had to assess if they thought the pros outweighed the cons or not.
In DT, we are working towards the creation of a simple toy using a pneumatic system. The children produced some initial sketches of their final design.

In English this week, we have continued to read our class book, 'The Night Bus Hero'. We have discovered more about the main character, Hector, and have used this information to respond to a comment made by his father of "Why can't you be more like your sister?" This involved the children writing in the first person to become Hector and write the reply that he would give. Our work last week, on writing a character description of Hector, helped the children to get into role and see the comment through his eyes.
In maths, we have been converting between units of measurement. Again, our prior learning of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 has helped the children see the links between mm & cm, cm & m and m & km. It is great when the children can see how their learning builds and helps them in other areas of maths.

This week in Merlins class the children have continued to write their persuasive speeches from the perspective of The White Witch. These speeches aim to lure the Pevensie children to come to her ice palace. The children have worked hard to construct three persuasive arguments which aim to provide the most convincing argument. Next week, they will have an opportunity to read their speeches aloud to each other in role.
In maths this week we have been multiplying and dividing fractions. We learnt that when multiplying fractions it was as a simple as multiplying the numerators and the denominators before simplifying. Some were able to put their new learning to the test with improper fractions and mixed numbers. Later in the week, we moved onto dividing fractions using the KFC method. I have been impressed to see how quickly the children have been able to practise and apply this method to some tricky questions.

In science, the children continued with their investigation into which form of exercise would increase their heart rates the most. After carrying out their investigations, we focussed on how to write up their findings. We looked at how using scientific knowledge and language in their conclusions helped them to show what they had learned and justify their predictions.
We have started our practices for the Carol Service, which is less than three weeks away! The children were given the opportunity to audition for a solo part for some of the carols. It was fantastic to see and hear so many children wanting to take up this opportunity and making the final decisions was extremely difficult. We look forward to seeing you all at the service on Wednesday 20th December at either 2pm or 6pm.
In DT this week, the children have finally constructed the bases to their steady hand game, making all the important cuts and holes in preparation for next week when they will contract their circuits to complete their games.
In geography, we have been exploring our local area using maps and we have used Ordnance Survey symbols to leisure opportunities in Abberley. Next week, we will be drawing comparisons between what it is like to live in Abberley vs The Alps.
