This week in English, the children have been focusing on the features of suspense writing. They have been practising techniques such as using short sentences and ellipsis to build tension and incorporating cliffhangers and other suspenseful elements into their writing. After exploring these features, they applied their learning to create their own suspense narratives, inspired by the plot of The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier. It has been fantastic to see their creativity and understanding of how to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
In maths, the children have been continuing their work with fractions. After practising comparing and ordering fractions, they moved on to adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This week, they have been applying their new skills to solve problem-solving questions where they had to carefully consider different methods to find the correct answers.
In science, the children have been investigating the five vertebrate groups and exploring their different methods of reproduction. They have been learning about the similarities and differences in how these groups reproduce, deepening their understanding of the biological processes that make each group unique.
In history, the children have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Jutes and why they came to Britannia after the Romans left in the 5th century. They have been exploring the 'push' and 'pull' factors that influenced their migration, including economic, social and environmental factors, to understand the historical context behind this significant movement of people.
